A speeding driver died early Tuesday morning after losing control of a car and crashing into a utility pole in southwest Oklahoma City, according to police.

The driver, identified by police as 50-year-old Gena Russell, was headed south on Meridian around 12:30 a.m. Police say Russell was going too fast and lost control near S.W. 149th Street. The car slammed into a utility pole, killing Russell and knocking out power in the area.

Police say Russell was only one person in the car and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The crash briefly shut down the road and caused a power outage. Workers from OG&E were called to the scene to repair the downed power lines.
