Snow Day Called For Most Oklahoma Children

Most students across the Sooner State will be home Tuesday.

Oklahoma's largest school districts have canceled classes due to frigid temperatures and snow-packed roads. Most of Oklahoma City's metropolitan districts called Tuesday classes by Monday afternoon.

"It starts with roads and whether buses will be able to make their stops at the scheduled time," Putnam City Schools Spokesperson Steve Lindley said.

When weather is difficult to predict, officials in the Putnam City district hit the roads early enough to notify parents by 5 a.m. on the day of inclement weather. For Tuesday, the call was made by Monday afternoon.

"The temperatures are so cold…I know it hurts my fingers and face," parent Kenia Bettencourt said.

The temperatures are also an important part of the decision-making process. Oklahoma City Public Schools calls off classes if the temperature drops below 10 degrees or if the wind-chill dips below five degrees. While there's no hard and fast rule in most other districts, the temperatures are still a concern.

"We didn't want children standing outside for 10 or 20 or 30 extra minutes in temperatures like that," Lindley said.
