8-Year-Old Girl Dies After Near Drowning In Greer County

An 8-year-old girl who nearly drowned in Greer County has died at the hospital.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the near drowning took place Monday evening at Lugert Lake. The Altus child was out wading with her grandfather at Horsehead Cove. The girl stepped off into deep water and went under, an OHP report states.

The grandfather pulled her from the water and started CPR until she was taken to the Quartz Mountain Medical Center by ambulance. She was later flown to an Oklahoma City hospital where she was admitted in critical condition, according to OHP.

At about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, OHP confirmed that the girl has died at the hospital.

The investigating trooper did not release the girl's name due to her age.
