The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office is warning the community about a sheriff's deputy impersonator.

Sheriff Joe Lester says a man is claiming to be Sgt. Joseph Kelly or Officer Hall. This impersonator has been calling people in the community and asking them for money. Lester says his office does not have anyone working under either names.

According to reports, the impersonator would tell the other person on the phone line that a warrant has been issued for their arrest because they failed to appear for jury duty. He or she must send money to avoid being arrested. So far, no one has fallen for the scam.

The sheriff's office says CCSO deputies always carry identification. If you're unsure, always ask to see the deputy's ID.

"If you receive a call from this individual, hang up and immediately call the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office and report the incident," said Sheriff Lester, "Do not send this person money for any reason or meet him in public."

If you have any information on this case, you're asked to call the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office at 701-8888.
