Target Asks Shoppers Not To Carry Guns

Target does not want people packing heat in its stores. That's the message it's sending out to gun owners.

Other major retailers, like Starbucks, Chipotle, Sonic and Chili's all have the same message: leave your guns at home.

Targets CEO posted a note online saying Target wants a safe and inviting environment for its shoppers and that means no heat.

A representative for the company said it can't enforce the request, and will abide by all local gun laws.

In 43 states there are "open carry" laws, including in Oklahoma, where you can visibly carry a licensed firearm in public. But open carry laws don't require businesses to allow guns on their properties.

Target does not sell guns in its stores or online. Wal-Mart and Home Depot say if guns are allowed in the state, they are allowed in their stores.

A group called "Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America" gathered nearly 400,000 signatures for a petition asking Target to prohibit shoppers from carrying guns into its stores.

The hundreds of comments about the decision on Target's own site have been generally supportive, too. But several posters promise not to honor the company's request.
