Some lawmakers are wondering if it's a good or bad idea to push the speed limit up on the Turner Turnpike.

Right now, the speed limit on the Turner Turnpike is 75 mph, but a Norman senator wants the state to look into raising that to 80.

According to an article in the Tulsa World, Senator Rob Standridge proposed an interim study on the possibility of increasing the speed limit from Tulsa to Oklahoma City. But the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority is against the idea, citing several potential problems.

The OTA said the roadway wasn't designed for a higher speed limit and cars traveling 80 might not have time to slow down if they encounter a slower moving car. Officials also said the on-ramps are not long enough for trucks to get up to the speed of traffic before entering the main roadway.

Although Senator Standridge has not decided whether to pursue legislation, similar legislation proposed last year did not pass.

The Oklahoma House is expected to decide whether to pursue the study this week.
