Agents with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Altus, Oklahoma, Monday morning.

According to the OSBI, just after midnight, Altus officers responded to the report of a gunshot fired in the 500 block of E. Elm. A witness flagged down an officer and pointed out the man who reportedly fired the shot.

However, when the officer confronted the man standing in a yard at the southeast corner of Elm and Hightower, police said the man, later identified as 22-year-old Bruce Puente, pulled a gun from his waistband.

The officer then pulled his duty weapon and fired. A back-up officer who was already on scene also fired at Puente.

Puente was struck once and was flown to an Oklahoma City hospital for treatment.

The officers’ names have not been released.

At the request of Altus police, OSBI agents are now investigating the incident. Agents will compile a comprehensive report of the incident and deliver a copy to the district attorney. The district attorney will determine if the shooting was justified.
