Oklahoma State quarterback J.W. Walsh has been named to the 2014 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List, the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced Wednesday.
The list consists of 39 of the nation’s top college quarterbacks, and Walsh is one of 13 juniors and five Big 12 quarterbacks included. The field will be narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Monday, Nov. 3. The Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce three finalists on Monday, Nov. 24, and the 2014 Davey O’Brien winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 11.
Walsh, a junior heading into the 2014 season, owns a career adjusted quarterback rating of 80.1, which ranks among the best in country for quarterbacks returning in 2014. His 170.11 quarterback rating in 2012 not only led the Big 12 and ranked fourth nationally, but was also the fourth best ever by a freshman.
As a sophomore in 2013, Walsh started five games and saw action in eight. He was second on the team in total offense per game at 203.4 yards and the Cowboys’ second leading passer at 1,333 yards, completing 113 of 190 pass attempts. The Denton, Texas native finished the season with nine passing touchdowns and three rushing scores.
This year’s list, compiled by a subset of the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee, was selected based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2014 college football season. All nominees were required to have started at least one college game previously.
The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The 38th Annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner will be held Monday, Feb. 16, 2015, in Fort Worth, Texas.
