Michael Thomas scored the match-tying goal in second-half stoppage time as OKC Energy FC extended its unbeaten streak to eight with a 1-1 draw against Arizona United FC Thursday night at Pribil Stadium.
Thomas tallied his fourth goal of the season in the match’s final minutes, netting a penalty kick in stoppage time that came as the result of an Arizona foul on a preceding Energy FC corner kick opportunity. On the corner kick, the referee signaled a foul just before OKC’s Paul Wyatt headed the ball into the Arizona net. On the ensuing penalty kick, Thomas pushed his kick to the right side of the net as Arizona keeper Evan Newton dived to the left.
Arizona took a 1-0 lead near the end of a first half when Long Tan scored after a shot by Matt Kassel that Energy FC keeper Samir Badr dived to knock away. With Badr on the ground, Tan chipped the rebound into the OKC net.
Despite the rainy conditions at Pribil Stadium, the teams combined for 28 total shots with OKC holding a two-shot edge. Arizona United FC held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.OKC’s record moved to 6-7-5, while Arizona United FC’s record went to 5-9-5.
Energy FC is back in action Saturday, July 19, when it takes on LA Galaxy II in a 7:00 pm start at Pribil Stadium.
