OU Volleyball Wins Fifth Straight

The OU volleyball team won its fifth straight match Thursday, beginning a three-game tour of North Carolina with a sweep of Wake Forest.

The University of Oklahoma volleyball team opened its weekend with a 3-0 sweep at Wake Forest by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-20 on Thursday evening. The Sooners, who have won five in a row, improved to 9-2 on the season, while the Demon Deacons dropped to 8-3.

Sophomore outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner and junior outside hitter Kierra Holst combined for 30 kills to lead an OU attack that hit .394; the third highest team attack rate of the season. Gardiner notched 16 kills and hit .433, while Holst tallied 14 kills and hit .478.

Freshman middle blocker Marion Hazelwood added 11 kills and committed just one error to hit a team-high .526. Fellow middle blocker, sophomore Micaela Spann chipped in with eight kills and hit .429. Spann led all players with four blocks.

Junior setter Julia Doyle set a season-high in a three-set match with 43 assists. She has totaled 40 assists or more in seven of 11 matches this season. Doyle added a team-high eight digs and two blocks.

The Sooners held Wake to a .295 attack rate. Jazmen Russell led the Demon Deacons with nine kills, while Caroline Wolf totaled a match-high 12 digs.

Oklahoma is in action tomorrow night at No. 13 North Carolina at 5 p.m. CT.
