Mustang Public Schools officials sent a letter to parents on Monday to inform them of a student being diagnosed with viral meningitis. School officials said a sixth grader at Canyon Ridge Intermediate has the illness.
In the letter, the principal told parents that their child is not at risk. Officials said the viral form of meningitis is typically less severe than the bacterial form and usually resolves without specific treatment.
The letter read in part:
"We are passing this information along to keep you informed. Additional information can be found on the district website.
We will always take every precaution and make every effort to keep your child safe and happy and communicate with you openly and promptly."
Administrators said they have been in constant communication with the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
