A serious problem with an Edmond Fire Engine is one of the cases that has led to a nationwide recall of 135 fire trucks. The issue can cause a wheel to fall off.

In Edmond, firefighters were lucky. They were returning from a call and were in a parking lot, turning around, when the passenger side wheel fell off.

“Being the one with the ladder on top, being top heavy, it could easily overturn,” said Edmond Fire Chief Doug Hall, who firefighters called immediately after the incident happened. “It was very shocking. It's not something that happens very often at all.”

Fortunately, no one was injured, but Hall said he's never seen anything like it.

“This is concerning and we immediately started doing a little research to see if this has happened to other departments,” said Hall.

The same thing did happen in Portland, Ore. And after learning of those two cases, the company that makes the trucks, Pierce Manufacturing, issued to recall.

“I'm glad they have acknowledged there was an issue,” Hall said.

It also means the city won't have to pay for the $7,000 it took to fix the engine.

Hall told News 9 they are doing monthly visual inspections on the engine to make sure there aren't any other problems. The City of Edmond said they only have one other engine manufactured by Pierce, and it isn't within the recall time frame.
