Police said they are searching for a purse-snatching thief who confronted a shopper outside of a business on the SW side of Oklahoma City.

The victim, Cheryal Hurt, 64, complied with the suspect's demands and believed that was why she was unharmed in the incident.

"I said, 'Oh please, please don't do this.'" Hurt said she began crying but that only had the suspect pause for a moment.

He grabbed her Michael Kors wristlet wallet and ran north of the Dollar General on SW 89th Street near Western Avenue on Nov. 20.

After the incident, she discovered that the suspect had picked her out of the crowd while she was shopping inside the store.

According to police reports, witnesses told officers the suspect lingered in the store.

With hindsight, witnesses believed the suspects waited for Hurt to leave so he could corner her in the parking lot.

"Although no weapon was seen, he grabbed her wallet and took off running," Sergeant Jennifer Wardlow said on behalf of the Oklahoma City Police Department. "She obviously was in fear for her life."

Hurt said she was scared when she called out, "I've been robbed."

Two store clerks came to her aid but her wallet was long gone, and so was the suspect.

But just a short time later, the suspect showed his face at Cigarettes For Less in the 7400 block of S. Western Avenue.

Surveillance cameras in the business captured him charging a pack of cigarettes to Hurt's credit card, one of several places where he attempted to use the stolen card.

"He tried to charge more at Burger King," Hurt said she canceled her card before that transaction. "I guess he was hungry after pulling off that."

Now relieved she got through the incident unscathed, she said she hopes police catch up to him before he takes it a step further.

"I hope he doesn't hurt anybody," said Hurt.

If you recognize the suspect, call Crime Stoppers at (405) 235-7300.

You can remain anonymous and could get a cash reward.
