An Edmond man accused of domestic violence and “sicking” his pit bull on his girlfriend was recently acquitted by an Oklahoma County jury of several felonies.

Chris Birchmier's live-in girlfriend told Edmond Police he beat and strangled her, then commanded his pit bull named 'Butter' to attack her at their home two years ago. Birchmier had been in the Oklahoma County Jail ever since. However, in court the woman's story didn't hold up, and a jury freed Birchmier.

His attorney Joi McClendon said prosecutors should now take aim at Birchmier's former girlfriend. “She should be prosecuted for filing a false police report. She admitted to perjury not once but twice during the trial,” she said.

For the past 18 months, Birchmier's dog has been cared for by Rod Goodhue's Pit Bull Rescue Oklahoma. Goodhue said he's willing to listen to Birchmier's appeal to get his dog back.

“The first priority is Butter's safety,” he said Tuesday. “I don't have a doubt at all Chris loves his dog.”
