Christmas trees didn't just grow this year, so did the prices. People who buy real trees could see an increase of $8 to $10 per foot. But, we will also pay more for artificial trees.

With Christmas just 21 days away, most of us are heading to stores and parking lots to pick out the best Christmas tree. But it's getting expensive to carry out the most popular holiday tradition.

According to Nielsen Research, about 80 percent of trees in homes this season will be artificial trees. So there is a two-week period where we can get the biggest savings.

According to USA Today, the first two weeks of December is the best time to go buy a fake tree. This might surprise you, but the article says Home Depot, K-Mart and Sears have the best deals on pre-lit artificial trees.

Lowes has some trees marked down as well.

If you want a real tree, the best time to buy one to save money is on Christmas Eve or even Christmas Day. Since stores will want to clear them out.
