More than four decades after it first came on the air, the original Star Trek proved it has a fan base that still seems to stretch the galaxy.

The popular show, shot in a Hollywood studio, has brought people to the Sooner State.

The words "rolling" and "action" rang out across Starbase Studios at 2700 S. May Avenue in Oklahoma City.

The actors were all dressed in uniforms worn by Captain Kirk, Spock, and Scottie on the fictitious spaceship, the Enterprise.

"I had too much time in my hands," said Richard Wells, who opened the sci-fi set for any group to use a little over a year ago.

Everything including the nearly 60 monitors being run from 16 computers was designed to look just like the set used to film the original Star Trek series.

"It's been four years of restoring it," said Wells, who was told he could have the once dilapidated set for free if he could remove it from a warehouse in Texas.

Wells has placed his much improved warehouse inside a studio here in town and said it's the only Star Trek set open to any group in the country.

Starbase Studios already produces an educational learning show with the help of fellow Oklahomans.

The science-heavy lessons will be made available online.

News 9 watched as a Star Trek fan group, which drove all the way from California, filmed their episodes which will also air online.

Since they don't have the rights to the original Star Trek series, Starbase cannot charge for use of its Enterprise.

However, the group does accept donations.

We're always looking for unique Oklahomans and places. If you have a story to tell go our Red Dirt Diaries page and fill out the form.
