The Oklahoma University women's basketball team dropped its second straight Big 12 Conference game, falling at West Virginia University 78-69 Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
The loss dropped OU's record in league to 7-2 and its overall mark to 13-7. WVU improved to 3-6 in the Big 12 and to 13-8 on the year.
Three Sooners finished in double-figures and was led by the 15 points of redshirt sophomore Peyton Little. Freshman point guard Gabbi Ortiz added 11 points and redshirt junior Kaylon Williams chipped in 10.
The offense for the Mountaineers came from the duo of Bre McDonald and Averee Fields who combined for 31 of the 78 points. McDonald finished with a career-high 19 points and Fields added a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
For the second consecutive game, Oklahoma had its two leading scorers on the bench for the majority of the first half. Williams – who only played two minutes against Texas Thursday – saw three minutes before she had to take a seat with two personal fouls. Sophomore Gioya Carter was hit with her second fouled one minute later and she too had to take a seat.
Losing both their offensive production, freshman center Vionise Pierre-Louis and freshman forward McKenna Treece had to come up big. Pierre-Louis led the Sooners in the first 20 minutes with nine points, while Treece chipped in four.
It was a 16-2 run by the Mountaineers in the opening half that broke open the contest. With the ballgame tied at 14-14, the spurt put West Virginia ahead 30-16. Oklahoma had a little momentum heading into half with a final 7-2 push that sliced the halftime advantage to single-digits at 32-23.
At full strength – with Carter and Williams back in the lineup - Oklahoma was able to get the lead within three in the second half at 51-48 after a jumper by senior Sharane Campbell-Olds with 9:39 to play. Four turnovers by the Sooners and a 10-2 run crushed any momentum the Sooners had though.
West Virginia scored 32 points off Oklahoma's 21 turnovers and tallied 17 second chance points. The Mountaineers sank 26-of-34 from the charity stripe, including 9-of-13 in the second stanza.
Oklahoma returns to the court Wednesday when it hosts Iowa State for the Sooner Jr. FANS Field Trip Day. The unique game is set to tip at 10:30 a.m.
