More people continue to move out to the northwest part of the metro, and now a major highway in that area is expanding to make room for all those drivers.

Over the last year you've probably already seen the orange barrels along SH-74, also called Portland Avenue, and you're about to see more.

The third of four projects to expand Portland Avenue from two lanes to four lanes starts Monday. We're talking about Portland Avenue from Memorial Road going north to N.W. 164th Street.

Construction on that portion of the project is expected to take about a year at a cost of about $34 million.

Northbound and southbound Portland Avenue will always be open. But at times, ODOT plans to close N.W. 150th and N.W. 164th,

The agency plans to send out daily traffic notices to let drivers know. At the end of this entire project, Portland Avenue will be a four-lane highway from Memorial Road all the way to Waterloo Road.

The fourth portion of this project doesn't start until 2017.

There is a public meeting about the project. It will be held at Crossing Community Church this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Crossings is located on Portland Avenue, just south of 150th.
