The Moore Police Department announced Thursday morning that it has purchased 18 body-worn cameras for its officers.

According to police, the department purchased 18 body-worn cameras, software and storage capabilities totaling $31,000. This pilot program will last six to 12 months.

If successful, and the money is available, police said the department will purchase an additional 60 to 70 cameras that will be issued to all Moore officers.

During the trial period, police said they want to determine the best practices that are being used by the law enforcement communities across the nation that safeguard not only the community's interest in police using the cameras, but also the growing discussion of a person's privacy rights when an officer enters someone's home, capturing juvenile information or upon entering a medical facility.

Software is available where the video can be redacted if necessary in relationship to the above concerns before released under an open records request, according to police.
