A metro man accused of preying on children, in some cases in public places, is not likely to be convicted for some of the alleged crimes.
Thomas Littlebird is in the Oklahoma County jail after someone finally came forward. The charges are many, and the details are hard to stomach.
Investigators said Littlebird made young children perform sex acts, and now, he is facing 25 counts. Littlebird is paralyzed and in a wheelchair.
"During our investigation, it looks like it's going so far back that some of the original victims are adults now,” Midwest City police Maj. Robert Cornelison said. "It looks like we've run out of time on our statute of limitations."
The oldest victims are adults, but the most recent victims are as young as 3-years-old. The lewd sex acts police say Littlebird made them do were mostly in public places including a Wal-Mart parking lot, a mall restroom, the Boathouse District and Bricktown.
"It's been going on for such a long time, and they feel, I hate to use the word comfortable, but they feel like they're not going to get caught,” Cornelison said. “They feel that nobody is watching, because they've got away with it for so long."
Three young victims are in protective custody, but police are looking for a fourth child they believe is also a victim. However, they say the mother is hiding the child.
"In fact, we're getting ready to file charges on the mother for not surrendering the child,” Cornelison said.
The list of charges stretches across several pages for alleged crimes against young children, and police may never know just how far that list stretches.
"It's unfortunate that sometimes it takes this long for something to surface like it did, but at least at this point we've got those who are responsible in custody, and we've filed the appropriate charges,” Cornelison said.
A mother of some of the victims was also arrested for allowing the abuse to happen.
