October is Fire Prevention Month and it can be a challenge to get children excited about fire prevention.

So, the Mustang Fire Department put on a production like no other to get elementary kids to soak up the safety tips and it worked.

Firefighters took popular songs and changed the lyrics into fire safety terms.

The students at Centennial Elementary School in Mustang loved it.

“It was really fun and I liked doing it,” 4th grader Teagen Owens said.

The Mustang Fire Department's show is 40 minutes of singing, dancing, puppets and comedy that teach fire prevention.

“We're just all kids at heart and so the best way we learn is when we are having fun, and so if you can let the kids have fun at the same time, they are going to learn a lot more,” said Andy Willrath with the Mustang Fire Department.

This year's safety message is "Hear the beep where you sleep.”

“So when they are testing their smoke detectors, to actually lay down in bed and when their mom and dad test them, they can hear it where they sleep,” Willrath told News 9.

Kids learned how to check smoke alarms, to change the smoke alarm batteries every six months, to stop, drop and roll if their clothes catch fire and to have a safe meeting place with family members after an emergency.

“It's better to learn this way. Sitting in a classroom is boring,” 4th grader Jacob Haller said.

The kids are encouraged to go home and teach their parents what they have learned.

“We want to see them playing in parks and playing in their yards and having fun, we don't want to see them in hospitals,” Willrath explained.

The Mustang Fire Department has two more performances at local schools next week to wrap up Fire Prevention Month.

The firefighters said they first started doing the skits at the department's Christmas party and then thought kids might like it if they incorporated safety tips into the lyrics.
