A half-cent sales tax to help fund schools in Pottawatomie County passed Tuesday night.

The tax passed by 63 percent of the vote with 3,054 votes, according to unofficial ballot results. 1,807 residents voted against the tax.

The tax increase will last for 10 years and will go toward capital improvements for all schools in the county. The sales tax was modeled off of the MAPS for KIDS project in Oklahoma City.

Tecumseh superintendent Tom Wilsie told News 9 the tax would raise an estimated $3.8 million a year, or about $286 per student.
