On Veterans Day, we look to our own families dig deep to learn about their time in service.

I had the privilege of interviewing my dad about his time in the service, and, how he's worked to help fellow veterans ever since.

It's a legacy we cannot let fade. Stories we must pass down to the next generation.

My dad is a veteran. Maybe yours is too? Maybe looking at their picture swells the same sense of pride.

Whomever you know who served our country, you too know why we can't let its importance disappear. It's why we dig deep to learn about their time in service.

So, here's my part -- a tribute to an important veteran in my life, my dad Bob Hedrick.

Bob joined the navy at 17 and went to boot camp in San Diego. They sent him to school to work at a navy hospital and eventually in a clinic aboard the USS Sperry.

In different ways, he's been taking care of fellow servicemen and women. As Commander of his local American Legion post, he's raised money to send local students to Boys & Girls State, handled claims for veterans at the VA Hospital to make sure they receive benefits they deserve, and presented the colors in countless parades.

This year, he'll be the grand marshal for the Blanchard Veteran's Day Parade. When asked to do it, he candidly said, “Why me? I'm no one special. I didn't do anything fantastic in the Navy. I just put my time in."

Time you've multiplied in numerous acts of patriotic pride, Dad. Time that's left a legacy I dare not let fade.

Happy Veteran's Day to you, and all who serve.
