For the first time ever, Twitter's user base is shrinking. Many believe it could be the new competition, but others say it could be the result of all the changes to Twitter.

Twitter has essentially seen nothing but growth since its creation. But for the past two quarters the social media giant's user base has been flat. It could be due to some major changes on the site.

The company is reportedly throwing around the idea to increase its 140 character limit to 10,000 characters. Also your Twitter timeline may soon look more like Facebook.

Instead of showing tweets as they are published, tweets may be organized based on relevancy, essentially, which ones you would care about most.

Also some experts feel Twitter is struggling to stay relevant. Instagram has 400 million monthly users compared to Twitter's 65 million. Facebook continues to grow despite already having five times as many users as Twitter. And an app called WhatsApp has one billion active monthly users.

In response, Twitter CEO said the company does not plan to re order timelines soon. And the company has told numbers may have been affected due to dormant users.
