Metro area homeowners looking to save a little on their water bill have an opportunity to do just that.

The Central Oklahoma Storm Water Alliance is partnering with several local cities.

Residents can purchase the 55-gallon barrels at a discount, for $63.50 each.

Rain Barrels collect rain water through a home’s gutter system.

Residents can then use that water to water plants, trees, flowers, and even wash their automobiles.

Oklahoma City Public Works Department Environmental Protection Manager Raymond Melton said rain barrels are becoming more popular, and are being used in large cities all across America.

“It keeps the rainwater coming off your house from going through our yards, and picking up yard chemicals we put on em, and running into the storm drain,” he said.

Melton said rain barrels are equipped with overflow spouts, drains, and lids that have screens.

He said that not only gets rid of standing water, it doesn’t allow mosquitoes to congregate.
