Last month, Governor Mary Fallin declared March 2016 “Colorectal Awareness Month” in Oklahoma. However, St. Anthony’s Gastroenterologist Dr. Barry Perkins said Oklahoma lags behind most other states when it comes to folks who get colorectal screenings.
Dr. Perkins said colon cancer is the second biggest cancer killer of men and women in America. “The two biggest barriers for colorectal screening are fear, and the preparation that you have to do the day before.”
Dr. Perkins said those “day before” preparations have become much easier for patients to deal with in recent years.
David Click lost his mother to colon cancer 23 years ago. Because of his family history, he has undergone six colorectal screenings.
“If you ever had a loved one who had to deal with cancer of the colon, then it would be a no-brainer to you,” said Click.
