Spurs head coach Greg Popovich opted to rest five of his best players when his team played in Oklahoma City on Saturday night, and the Thunder made sure to take advantage of the shorthanded Spurs as OKC rolled to a 111-92 victory.
With the win, the Thunder has won seven straight games and is playing some of its best basketball of the season when it matters most.
Kevin Durant scored 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win, while Russell Westbrook added 29 points and eight assists.
With 8:27 left in the second quarter, Spurs’ guard Andre Miller hit a pair of free throws to put San Antonio up by nine points. There was worry in the air throughout Chesapeake Energy Arena, seeing the Thunder were almost down double-digits to a team without their best players, but fortunately the guys in the white jerseys weren’t going to back down.
Led by its ferocious point guard, the Thunder put together the pieces throughout the rest of the second quarter as OKC flipped the script and took a four-point lead into halftime.
San Antonio struggled to get much going out of intermission, and it was just the opposite for the Thunder. In no time at all, the Thunder completely ran away with the game in the third frame. A Durant dribble-and-pop 3-pointer capped off a 22-to-5 Thunder run that put OKC up 83-61 and all but evaporate any chance the Spurs had of coming back.
Enes Kanter added 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, while Serge Ibaka had a solid game with 15 points and eight rebounds.
