IndyCar promoters are exploring the possibility of holding a race in Oklahoma City.
Mayor Mick Cornett says the city was approached a couple of months ago.
“It really isn’t about a race as it is creating an urban festival,” says promoter Joe Mattioli.
Cornett pushed for a race on downtown streets years ago, but city council put the brakes on the plan due to road construction.
“We are thrilled to have them look at the market and we’ll see if it goes anywhere,” Cornett said.
The same promoters are behind an IndyCar street race in Boston labor day weekend and they won’t say what other cities they are looking at or when a decision will be made.
City Council voted to give the IndyCar promoters exclusive rights to holding a race here. The event would occur in 2017 or 2018, if OKC is chosen.
