A sense of security and if at all possible, a sense of calmness, is what the Garvin County Sheriff said he hopes to provide for families in that area just west of Interstate 35 in the Katie Community near Wynnewood.

The National Weather Service in Norman confirmed at least Ef-3 damage with the tornado that touched down near Katie.

On Tuesday, the day after the storm, residents began going through the debris trying to find anything that is salvageable.

The Garvin County Sheriff said in his life span in Oklahoma, this is the largest tornado he has ever seen.

"If there's any blessing in disguise it's that it hit in a rural area. And maybe only 10 to 15 home destroyed. If this would have hit a populated area, the numbers would have been much higher." said Garvin County Sheriff Larry Rhodes.

There was one fatality in Garvin County. Mike Barnes, 76, lived near E County Road 1680 and N County Rd. 3250.

The Emergency Management office told us they hoped the damage was less, but they expected much more.
