A loaded gun led to the arrest of a Bethany Middle School student.

Police said another student alerted the school and the principal discovered the weapon in a backpack.

Bethany Middle School students keep their backpacks in a separate room, so the principal was able to secure the weapon before confronting the student.

“Hats off the principal for acting on a tip, and within minutes, we had the student subdued and the situation under control,” Bethany Schools Superintendent Kent Shellenberger said.

Shellenberger said there was a short scuffle, when the 14-year-old student tried to escape the principal’s office.

School officials said they're taking "reasonable disciplinary action against the student.”
