One suspect is in custody and another is on the run after a botched burglary south of the metro, investigators said.
It all started with a stolen trailer in McClain County.
Just outside Wayne in rural McClain County is Marcum's Twisted Ranch. It's also where one twisted chase came to an end when deputies got a call early Saturday about a stolen trailer. Minutes later, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol got a call, too.
“OHP responded to a possible accident involving a trailer and a small vehicle,” McClain County detective Dana Guthrie said.
McClain County investigators say the Donald Gilbert and Carlos Billings took the trailer right out of a driveway in Wayne.
“They were unable to remove the hitch and were trying to pull this trailer unsecure with it just sitting on the ball,” Guthrie said. “The trailer came off the truck causing the truck and the trailer to leave the roadway, go through a fence and become stuck in the mud.”
That's when detectives said Gilbert and Billings made their way up to the ranch.
“An employee of the ranch confronted one of the male suspects inside the barn,” Guthrie said. “The other one started walking away.”
The owner of the ranch just so happened to be pulling up and snapped a picture of Gilbert, but Billings took off running into the trees. Both men have a long criminal record, and both have spent time in prison. Gilbert was taken into custody, and Billings is still on the run.
Anyone with information about Billings' whereabouts is asked to call the McClain County Sheriff's Office at (405) 527-2141.
