It was Wednesday, May 25, that an Oklahoma City bike officer shot and killed 43-year-old Derek Allen Prophet in the parking lot of a restaurant near Sheridan and Western. This happened after, police say, Prophet pulled a knife and made a threatening gesture at the officers.

News 9 checked and Prophet had been in the Oklahoma County Jail a total of seven times since 2004 for DUI, drugs, and assault and battery.

Police stated he is from California but has listed addresses all over the metro as his home the past several years, but was known to be a transient in the Oklahoma City area.

Right now, the officer who shot him, Msgt. Steve Helmer, has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the police investigation into the shooting. Helmer is a 33-year veteran of the force.

And police told News 9’s Adrianna Iwasinski they are reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses to see exactly what happened.
