A mother of two young children was arrested for doing something that happens more than it should at this time of the year.

Police say 21-year-old Renee Mayfield left her 1- and 2-year-old children in the backseat of her car Monday afternoon.

She parked the Chrysler sedan about 5:30 p.m. in the Walmart parking lot on east Interstate 240.

Police say even though the temperature was only 84 degrees at the time, a bystander called 911 after seeing both children sweating profusely.

When police caught up to Mayfield in the store, she claimed the children’s father was supposed to be in the car watching them.

Police say the father wasn’t even in the state of Oklahoma Monday afternoon.

“It’s heartbreaking when you see it,” said EMSA operations manager John Graham.

He said EMSA responds to several of these kinds of calls during the summer.

News 9: “What’s the most common excuse?”

Graham: “Uh, they were in a hurry, or they were just going to run in for a minute.” he said.

Police booked Mayfield into the Oklahoma County jail on a child neglect complaint.  Her bond was set at $10,000.
