Local fire departments are now urging residents to consider buying a device that could be crucial in an emergency. So if you're unable to answer the door, crews can now get to you just by using your keys.
The device is called a Knox Box and the Oklahoma City Fire Department tells News 9 they see them at businesses all the time, but almost never at homes. So now they want to make sure residents are aware these boxes are great for a home.
Imagine a scenario where you or a loved one has a medical emergency and can't get to the door. When fire crews arrive they have to get inside your home somehow, either it be breaking a window or door. But if you have a Knox Box, they can just use your keys.
Only your local fire department has the key to your box. So when they get to your home, they use their master key to get into your box and then just walk through the front door.
Blanchard fire is also reminding residents on Facebook how critical these boxes can be. Crews would be able to get to you much faster.
"Time is the big thing because that's so crucial when you're looking at medical calls when every second truly counts," said Benny Fulkerson, OKCFD.
When you get yours, you need to call your local fire department so they can set it up.
