OKC Woman Honored For Using CPR To Save Mother's Life

The Oklahoma City Fire Department awarded resident Lauren Long on Thursday after she saved her mom’s life during a cardiac arrest.

Lauren took a ten-minute CPR course at the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon expo earlier this spring. One month after the lesson, her mom, Mary, got ventricular defibrillation.

Lauren was with her best friend at the time. She said, “We started it pretty rapidly. The only thing I remember is the song that we were taught to do the compressions, which is Bee Gees, Stayin’ Alive.”

They called 911 and started compressions until the firefighters arrived. The firefighters at Station 3 say Lauren’s knowledge of basic hands-only CPR made the difference between life and death for her mother.

Lauren and Mary, the mother-daughter duo, are now advocating for other families to take CPR lessons.

Lauren joked, “She gave birth to me and I saved her life, so we’re even.”
