Authorities are investigating the death of a man while he was in police custody in northwest Oklahoma City, Wednesday morning.

According to police, officers responded to a disturbance call at a 7-Eleven store at N.W. 46th and Western. Witnesses said the man was cursing at employees at the 7-Eleven store. Officers arrived and tried to talk to the man. However, he charged at the officers with a pair of scissors. An officer then tasered the man.

The man reportedly fell to the ground and began to stab himself.  Officers said they disarmed the suspect and placed handcuffs on him.  The suspect continued to be combative towards the officers. So officers placed the suspect in maximal restraints, securing his legs, police said.

According to police, officers then noticed the suspect was in medical distress and having difficulty breathing. They removed his handcuffs and called EMSA.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have identified the man, but they are not releasing it pending notification of family members.

The Medical Examiner will determine his exact cause of death.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation. Their names will be released on Thursday, police said.
