Police have identified a man who was shot and killed by a security officer at a southwest Oklahoma City apartment complex early Thursday morning.

According to police, officers responded to the incident at about 1:30 a.m. at the Potomac House Apartments, located at S.W. 59th and S. May Avenue.

Police learned that a woman came home and told the man inside, later identified as 38-year-old Kenta Stepney, that someone came to the apartment complex and was bothering her. Stepney then went to look for the man accused of bothering the woman. When Stepney found him, he began shooting in his direction.

A security guard, later identified as 31-year-old Joseph Modia, reportedly came to the scene and saw Stepney firing a gun. He confronted Stepney, but Stepney reportedly raised and fired his weapon at Modia. That’s when Modia returned fire, killing Stepney.

Modia was not injured.

The man accused of bothering the woman was not found.

This is Oklahoma City’s 40th homicide of 2016, according to police. This case will be presented to the district attorney’s office at the conclusion of the investigation.

A neighbor told News 9's Rachel Calderon that he heard about six gunshots during the incident. Another woman said she came home at about 6:30 a.m. and saw blood on the sidewalk.
