A man shot at a Tonkawa police officer after 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20.

The suspect is on the loose and considered armed and dangerous.

The officer was working alone when he tried to make a simple traffic stop at the I-35 and Highway 60 interchange in Kay County. The suspect vehicle fled, leading the officer on a chase for about a mile down I-35 South.

“The suspect shot at the officer really just as soon as he stopped and kicked the door open,” said Tonkawa Police Chief John Whitham. The suspect fired two rounds. The officer was not injured and fired back, but the driver sped off again, leading the officer and other authorities on another chase.

Chief Whitham says Kay County and Noble County Sheriff’s Departments had deputies helping on the chase. The driver exited on Fountain Road, and got away from police in the gravel roads and low visibility at night.

“No telling what all he is into, but obviously he is armed and dangerous,” said Whitham.

The suspect is described as a white male, 6 feet tall, lanky and about 165 pounds. He has short, wavy brown hair and some chin hair.

The vehicle is described as a dark green or black, small to mid-size extended cab pickup. It is possibly a Nissan, Toyota or Isuzu. The truck was lowered, has dark tail light covers and a defective tag light. The letters “NLM” or “NIM” are painted in red on the right side of the tailgate.

The chief is making it a priority to get this man off the streets. “We’re working on a couple leads now and we’re hopeful that they’re good ones.”

Anyone with information about the suspect or the vehicle is asked to contact the Tonkawa Police Department or the Kay County Sheriff’s Office.
