Interstate 44 northbound from Interstate 240 to SW 59th St. was closed overnight Wednesday due to a fatality collision involving an ambulance.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol closed off the roadway shortly after midnight, Wednesday. The ambulance was en route transferring a patient from St. Anthony Hospital in SW OKC to St. Anthony Hospital in Midtown OKC.
According to authorities, the St. Anthony ambulance was traveling northbound on Interstate 44, before the vehicle departed roadway to the right for an unknown reason. The vehicle began to roll before the compartment separated. The vehicle landed on its top, and the cargo compartment was destroyed upon impact. Two passengers were ejected an unknown distance from the cargo compartment.
The patient was identified as Carolyn D. Koch, 66, of Blanchard. Koch was pronounced dead at the scene due to head injuries. The condition of the patient before the crash is unknown.
The two medics in the vehicle were identified as Matthew Erickson (driver), and Chelsea Stewart. Both were transported to OU Medical Center following the crash. Erickson was transported in good condition, while Stewart was transported in good condition with back injuries.
OHP is currently leading the investigation.
