Lawmakers on Lincoln Boulevard are said to be close on coming up with the money to pay the state's bills for the next year, but no raises for state workers or teachers.

I'm not surprised, and neither are some staunch supporters of the Oklahoma City school district. They decided months ago it was time to uncouple the district from long awaited state pay raises for teachers, and try to come up with bonuses for local teachers.

I admire their determination and certainly agree with their goal of paying teachers more even if it is well short of what they deserve. But their method of raising the money, it's going to be a very tough selling job.

They got 16,000 signatures on petitions, to ask Oklahoma City voters to tax themselves, for the first time ever, with a local income tax.

That's never happened here before.

Not only that, but the money raised would be scattered among some 20 school districts within the Oklahoma City limits, because of that nobody's sure how much the bonuses for teachers and support staff would be.

Another tough pitch.

The people of Oklahoma consistently say teachers should make more money - this Oklahoma City ballot proposal would be an interesting test.

I'm Kelly Ogle and that's My 2 Cents.
