First responders are trying to help a young Stillwater girl recover from a horrible accident. 3-year-old Merida Gibson was accidentally ran over by her own grandmother in a driveway on Thanksgiving.
The paramedics and police who responded recognized the family. Just hours earlier, they had delivered Thanksgiving’s dinner to the Police Department. Police immediately started collecting donation from officers and just delivered $800 to the family.
“It’s great to work with people like that and it reminds us of why we do the job we do,” says Capt. Kyle Gibb with the Stillwater Police Dept.
Merida and her sister and mother had travelled from Mexico to visit with their grandmother who lives in Perkins.
Their friend who hosted Thanksgiving dinner where the accident occurred tells News 9 Merida is improving. She now breathing on her own and on Wednesday sat up in her bed for the first time since the accident.
“Prayers work,” says family friend Nita Buckner, who says the family expects Merida to be about to leave the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit today.
A GoFundMe page has already raised close to $10,000.
“It’s overwhelming to know that so many people pulled together for this one child,” adds Buckner.
