Police are warning the public of a “secret shopper” scam making the rounds this holiday season.
Authorities say the scammers target individuals with an offer to become a secret shopper. The scammer sends the victim a package with fake check totaling hundreds of dollars, and instructions on what to do with the money.
According to those instructions, the victim was to deduct a few hundred for their commission, spend a few hundred on their “secret shopper items” and send the rest back to the scammer via Moneygram, authorities say.
After a few days, the victim’s bank would turn the bogus check and, in some instances, freeze the account.
Police warn the public to stay vigilant and if you come across a scam like this, if it seems like it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
