For many in our area, holiday vacations are officially underway.

As thousands hit the road, AAA wants to help make sure your cars are ready for the trip.

They'll be offering free car inspections Thursday morning at their NW 39th and Portland location.

"The 10-day period around Christmas last year, AAA was called out for emergency roadside assistance 5,089 times," AAA spokeswoman Leslie Gamble said.

Such high numbers are part of what prompted the effort to make sure Oklahomans are prepared to deal with the winter road hazards.

As winter weather settles in and temperatures drop, car batteries are more likely to malfunction.

Car batteries typically have a life of three to five years.

That is just one of the things technicians will be inspecting.

"Battery checks will be provided by AAA along with tire inflation checks and checking the fluids like windshield wiping fluids since we can expect to see some precipitation over the next few couple of days," Gamble said.

Those who can't make it to the event Thursday are encouraged to keep a pair of jumper cables and an emergency kit in their car.

For those who do plan on attending, inspections will be from 6 a.m. to noon.
