A scammer is posing as a Pottawatomie County sheriff’s deputy over the phone.
According to the sheriff’s office, the caller tells people he is Sgt. Scott Hawkins, and demands money for a warrant.
Investigators say the scammer exhibits very aggressive tactics and has used profanities.
“We just want everybody to know that we do not do that. Nobody will ever call them and tell them they own money,” Sheriff Mike Booth said.
The real Sgt. Scott Hawkins noticed something was wrong when people began calling him and looking for him Thursday in response to the scam calls.
“You always hear about people getting their identities stolen. I never thought it would actually happen to me,” Hawkins said.
Hawkins says the man making these calls could be anywhere, using an Oklahoma number through a website.
So far, five people have reported receiving the call, but Hawkins thinks there could be more victims who haven't come forward.
"Don’t give out your location, your personal information. Never pay anything over the phone,” Hawkins said.
