Supporters sang a victory song after the State Board of Education approved the charter application Thursday for Sovereign Community School.

The vote gave Founder Phil Gover and his team the go-ahead to open. He said it was a relief after two rejections by the Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education

Gover said Sovereign Community School will focus on holistic wellness, identity development, and will serve as an indigenous common space in the city.

When fully rolled out, Sovereign Community School will serve 500 students in the 6th - 12th grades. The school will be inside the old Mayfair Elementary School near NW 50th and Independence, renovated and ready to open by August 2019.

The application received two 'no' votes. One of them from Superintendent Joy Hofmeister, who was unable to give News 9 a statement on the reason why.
