Oklahoma City Police are investigating the ninth officer-involved shooting of the year.

Sergeant Charles McMackin and another officer attempted to pull 35-year-old Kevin Kindred over for a traffic violation late Monday night.

Kindred led police on a short pursuit that ended at Northwest 36th and St. Charles.

“The driver of the vehicle exited the vehicle with a gun in his hand,” said Captain Bo Mathews, Oklahoma City Police Department. “The Oklahoma City officer told him to get on the ground and then the officer shot the suspect.”

Capt. Mathews said Kindred did not fire at the officer.

Kindred was injured and taken to a local hospital for surgery.

Investigators learned Sgt. McMackin was the firing officer. He was not hurt and has been placed on paid administrative leave.

“At this point we’re not able to interview the shooting officer for at least two days,” said Capt. Mathews. “So at that point, we’ll be able to find out what the traffic violation was, why the officer pulled him over.”

Kindred had three passengers in his car, none of them were arrested.

Police said Kindred has a lengthy criminal history and is a familiar face to law enforcement. He is currently on Oklahoma Department of Corrections probation for an assault and battery with a dangerous weapon conviction.

Meanwhile, the investigation continues into the officer that fired at him.

“Upon completion of the investigation,” said Capt. Mathews. “It will be presented to the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s office.”

Sgt. McMackin has been with the department for seven years.
