The City Council of Oklahoma City has passed a city ordinance to reduce municipal penalties concerning marijuana.

If a person is found with a small amount of marijuana, they will be fined $400 instead of $1,200 and will not face jail time, according to the new ordinance.

Oklahoma City police Chief Bill Citty recommended the ordinance after the passage of State Question 788 which legalized medical marijuana.

He said it would help keep Oklahoma City safer by keeping more officers on the streets rather than processing a person into the county jail.

Citty said he he had been working with attorneys and judges for years to come up with alternatives to putting someone in jail on a minor offense.
