Thursday was scheduled to be opening day for the Oklahoma City Dodgers.

However, with COVID-19 shutdowns, the organization wanted to find a way to contribute to essential workers.

“Today on our schedule would have been our opening day for minor league baseball,” President and General Manager of the Oklahoma City Dodgers Michael Byrnes said.

Dodgers staff delivered 5,000 hotdogs to 15 organizations Thursday, along with lunch packages and drinks.

The organizations are in a league of their own, showing up to necessary work while others quarantine safely.

“It’s incredible what all these individuals are doing. They are putting themselves on the front lines to protect the rest of us and get our community back to operating the way we all want it to be,” Byrnes said.

The free hot dog lunches were handed out to medical professionals, police officers and others.

“Baseball and hot dogs go hand in hand, so a little bit just a symbolic way for us to thank everyone but also put a baseball twist on it,” Byrnes said.

Meals were sponsored by food distributors.
