It has been a challenge for high-risk citizens to go out and grab essentials since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic arrived in Oklahoma.

One metro group decided to step up to help deliver groceries to those who need it most.

Hey Neighbor OKC wanted to make sure those at high-risk for COVID-19 receive food and other necessities without risking exposure to the virus.

“Just feels really great to know you’ve done something to help somebody,” group member Christina Sanders said. “You just want to do more.”

The group started through social media where a few people offered to take grocery requests and deliver to high-risk citizens.

Their good deeds received a lot of attention, which spurred Sanders to find a way to bring volunteers together.

Today, Hey Neighbor OKC now has 10 volunteers.

“You just feel like they’re your friends, like you’ve made new friends and stuff and made great connections and stuff with people,” Sanders said. “I just think that’s what it’s about. It brings out the best in people.”

Sanders said the pandemic is especially tough for elderly citizens.

“You don’t want them out there,” Sanders said. “You just want to protect them because they are most vulnerable to the disease. It’s hard for them to fight and resist.”

Sanders said the group hopes to get more volunteers.

“Because often times you might not be the one that can go out and deliver,” Sanders said. “Whatever your heart wants you to do, there’s so many ways to serve and to help people.”
