A local animal rescue is devastated after learning plans to save over 200 cats and dogs last weekend were canceled because of COVID-19.

207 cats and dogs on a growing list were scheduled to fly out of Will Rogers World Airport last Saturday for a new life in Oregon. COVID-19 halted those plans, abruptly.

“I was absolutely sick when I got that call from our receiving rescues and shelters stating that they were not going to be able to take them,” said Vikki Smith, founder of Fetch Fido A Flight based in Edmond. “Their governor in the state had basically closed down their businesses.”

Smith is now actively working on a plan to save the animals from euthanization. For some, it’s already too late.

“The shelters are just completely filling up because people obviously are losing their jobs and have no means to take care of their pets anymore,” said Smith. “Unfortunately, the surrender rate has gone up as well.”

Donations for what will be packed upcoming flights help, however the nonprofit hopes you may be able to open your homes to foster pets waiting for a new life.

“Statistics show that animals are amazing at helping people get through times like this, they are great at helping reduce stress and anxiety in not only adults but children as well,” said Smith.

The COVID-19 pandemic isn't just hitting humans hard. Our four-legged friends could sure use a helping hand.

“We just need somebody to open their home and show these animals some love while they are in transition between the shelter and wherever they are going to go,” said Smith.

There is no time frame yet as far as when the cats and dogs selected will leave Oklahoma on a flight.

If you’re interested in fostering a cat or dog for the time being, contact Fetch Fido A Flight online.

Smith also encourages you contact a local shelter to inquire about fostering.
